THE ART FORM

American Mime is a unique performing art created by a particular
balance of playwriting, acting, moving, pantomime, and theatrical equipment.
It is entirely different from the pantomime of the French Schools and
the dance of the Eastern Mime disciplines.
American Mime is a
complete theatre medium defined by its own aesthetic laws, terminology,
techniques, script material and teaching methods. Basically, it is a medium
for non-speaking actors who perform, in characterization, the symbolic
activities of American Mime plays through movement that is both telling
and beautiful.

REVIEWS

“Paul Curtis and his American Mime Theatre have brought to the
concert stage a new medium so fresh in approach, so studied in discipline
and so exciting to, see that it must be destined to affect the entire approach
to the art of Mime. It cannot be described as founding itself of the French
school of Marceau and Decroux because the art of these two gentlemen is
self-indulgent and introspective when compared to the communication offered
by this new form.”
THE SPRINGFIELD NEWS

“They are creating a whole new performing art, not a transplant
of French pantomime. Nothing comparable has happened in this country since
Modern Dance developed 35 years ago.”
NEWARK STAR-LEDGER

“Anyone going to see The American Mime Theatre had best forget anything
previously seen from European sources. The Curtis conceptions are entirely
unlike anything seen hereabouts. He offers the totally new in Mime.”
BACKSTAGE

“This Company has worked out their own language and techniques.
French Mimes couldn't give them what they wanted, a blending of believable
acting expressed through a new kind of movement.”
N.Y. DAILY NEWS

“Curtis is making American audiences realize there is an important
difference between a Pantomimist and a Mime.”
DANCE MAGAZINE

“Curtis is playing with fire and watching him you can feel the heat.
Curtis' contribution is valuable, engrossing, and totally serious and how
many Mimes can make that claim.”
WASHINGTON STAR

“It's hard to categorize this group, but it is certain that when
they perform they create their own classification.”
DANCE MAGAZINE

“The control of each performer is brilliant . . . shrouding each
like white barbed wire are this medium's uncompromising limitations.”
ADLIB

“Every single member is a perfectly trained dancer and an expansive
actor, and the sensitive and all-pervading interaction between the Company
is very impressive . . . an exciting extension of the American theatre
scene.”
SHOW BUSINESS

“Do see this company; it isn't often you will get such a gift.”
